Prime Minister Justin Trudeau welcomes a delegation of twelve leaders from the Caribbean to Ottawa for a two-day summit. The summit aims to strengthen ties between Canada and the Caribbean countries through various initiatives.
The Caribbean Community, known as CARICOM, consists of fifteen countries and five overseas territories, excluding Cuba. CARICOM focuses on inclusive economic growth and climate change, with recent attention on the situation in Haiti.
De facto Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry will be visiting Canada for the first time since assuming office in August 2021 following the assassination of the country’s president.
Wednesday’s meetings will include three working sessions, and Trudeau will have individual meetings with several leaders between the sessions.
On Thursday, the leaders will participate in a trade and investment roundtable, followed by an afternoon press conference.
Among the attendees are Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados, who co-chairs a United Nations advocacy group for the Sustainable Development Goals together with Trudeau.
