An attorney representing a woman in a $25 million lawsuit against Trey Songz, accusing him of sexual assault at a 2016 party in West Hills, argues in new court documents that both the R&B singer’s record label and manager should remain as defendants in the case. The attorney claims that both Atlantic Records Group LLC and the singer’s manager and promoter, Kevin Liles, were aware of Songz’s alleged history of violence against young women.
Atlantic Records Group LLC and Kevin Liles are seeking to be removed as defendants in the case, claiming that they have no liability for the allegations of negligent supervision and intentional infliction of emotional distress. However, the plaintiff’s lawyer filed court papers disputing these claims.
“This case involves sexual abuse, sexual battery, and assault against the plaintiff by Trey Songz,” states the attorney representing the plaintiff.
According to the plaintiff’s attorneys, Liles managed and promoted Songz’s music career, while Atlantic Records operated his record label and oversaw his image, brand, and career as a musical artist. The attorney further asserts that Songz, Liles, and Atlantic Records had a mutually beneficial and profitable relationship where they often acted as agents, principals, employees, representatives, or in other capacities for each other.
The plaintiff’s attorney argues that Liles and Atlantic Records knew or should have known about Songz’s alleged history of violence, particularly towards young women, due to their close relationship with the singer. The attorney maintains that they also knew that the way they promoted Songz would attract young women, resulting in the sexual assault committed against the plaintiff.
Recently, the plaintiff requested the dismissal of Trey Songz Productions LLC from the case “without prejudice,” allowing the possibility of reviving the case against the company at a later time.
The court documents do not provide the reasoning behind the plaintiff’s decision. However, defense attorney Michael G. Freedman stated in his court papers that there is no connection between the plaintiff’s alleged injuries and Trey Songz Productions.
According to the lawsuit filed on February 9, the plaintiff initially had a friendly relationship with Trey Songz. However, on March 24, 2016, the singer allegedly forced her into non-consensual sexual activity in a bedroom at a party in West Hills. After the alleged assault, the plaintiff sought medical help, and the hospital staff reported the incident to the police.
Due to the stress of the assault and her fear for her life, the plaintiff did not provide Songz’s name to the police at the time.
