Tragic news hit the UMD community as senior defensive lineman Reed Ryan passed away in Duluth on Tuesday night. He was known for his positivity and dedication both on and off the football field.
The University of Minnesota Duluth announced the passing of 22-year-old Reed Ryan, a standout member of the football team.
Coach Curt Wiese fondly remembers Ryan as someone who always brought joy and encouragement to those around him. “He was a good person through and through, looking out for his teammates and constantly striving to improve,” said Wiese.
Wiese recounted the heartbreaking moment when Ryan collapsed while working out in the weight room on November 21 and the subsequent efforts to save him at Essentia Health.
Despite the devastating loss, Wiese emphasized the positive impact Ryan made on the team and the wider community. “Reed will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on forever. To his family, thank you for allowing us to be part of his inspiring young life. Reed was a Bulldog through and through,” Wiese added.

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Ryan was widely recognized for his exceptional talent and sportsmanship, earning prestigious awards in his high school years. His impact continued at UMD, where he recorded several tackles in the last season.
Forrest Karr, the director of athletics at UMD, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting Ryan’s kindness and the unity he brought to the people around him. “Reed was a kind, caring and thoughtful young man who enjoyed bringing people together,” said Karr.
Ryan’s selfless nature extended beyond his life as he had made the decision to be a donor. His commitment to helping others will be remembered by those whose lives he touched.
A memorial wake and funeral service have been planned in Ryan’s honor, providing an opportunity for his friends, family, and teammates to pay their respects and celebrate his life.
