Tragic Loss: Pennsylvania High School Football Player, 17, Passes Away On Field

  • A high school football player from Jersey Shore died after collapsing on the field.
  • Max Engle, 17, passed away after spending a week in the hospital.
  • Engle was known for his fierce loyalty to his teammates.

A high school football player in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania, has tragically passed away after collapsing during a football game earlier this month, according to his family.

Max Engle’s family shared the news in a heartfelt Facebook post on Saturday.

“Max has been fighting hard throughout this week, but he needed to move on to fulfill a greater purpose,” the family expressed in a joint statement.

Engle, 17, collapsed during a football game between Jersey Shore High School and Selinsgrove High School on September 8, as reported by The Daily Item, a local Pennsylvania newspaper.

The family described Engle as a true “warrior” on the football field, known for his unwavering loyalty to his team and coaches.

“He will be greatly missed every single day and we know he will be with us in everything we do,” the family expressed.

The Jersey Shore Area School District released a statement confirming the postponement of their next football game out of respect for Engle’s family.

“We will play again, but our players and the rest of the Bulldogs need some time,” the school district stated.

The cause of Engle’s death is still unclear, although cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death for high school and college athletes.

In a recent incident, a top high school basketball player in Pinson, Alabama, passed away after experiencing cardiac arrest during a school workout.

Cardiac arrest is rare for individuals under 30, but athletes can be at risk during intense competition. For example, a 24-year-old Buffalo Bills safety, Damar Hamlin, collapsed on the field during a game in Cincinnati back in January.

In another case, a high school football player from Scottsdale, Arizona, was sidelined this summer after experiencing cardiac arrest during a workout.

Bronny James, son of LeBron James, also had a scare when he went into cardiac arrest during a practice at the University of Southern California. He was rushed to the ICU but is now stable. Similarly, Vince Iwuchukwu, a USC player, suffered sudden cardiac arrest during a practice in July 2022, as reported by CNN.

A study published in 2020 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that Black male NCAA Division I basketball players had the highest incidence rate of sudden cardiac arrest and death among athletes aged 11 to 29.

In 2020, Keyontae Johnson, a guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder, also collapsed on the court during a game while playing for the University of Florida.

Johnson declined a $5 million insurance payout from the NCAA, as it would have required him to quit playing college basketball. He only played five games at Florida in the following two years before transferring to Kansas State, where he became a third-team All-American, according to USA Today.
