Tragic Loss: Liberty University Mourns the Passing of 19-Year-Old Football Player Tajh Boyd

The Liberty University football program was devastated by the loss of freshman offensive lineman Tajh Boyd. On Sunday, the university announced his untimely death. Exact details surrounding Boyd’s passing have not been revealed. However, it is worth mentioning that he would have turned 20 on August 20.

In a joint statement, head coach Jamey Chadwell and athletic director Ian McCaw expressed their sorrow and shared, “It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the loss of one of our student-athletes, Tajh Boyd. Tajh joined our Liberty Football family in January, and his impact on the program will be felt for years to come.”

The Liberty University community is known for its tight-knit and inclusive atmosphere. Those who become a part of it are considered family, and Boyd was no exception. The statement continued, “When you come to the Mountain, you immediately become a part of the Liberty University family and something truly special. We thank God for bringing Tajh into our Liberty Athletics community, and we will always remember him as a Flame. Tajh will be missed dearly.”

The university stands in solidarity with Boyd’s family, teammates, friends, football coaching staff, and the entire athletics department during this difficult time. In their shared grief, they seek solace, comfort, and understanding from the Lord.

Boyd, a talented three-star player, had committed to Liberty in December after attending Oscar F. Smith High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. He played a significant role in leading his high school team to consecutive state championships. Rivals rated him as a three-star recruit, and he received offers from various esteemed institutions such as Bowling Green, Buffalo, Campbell, Duke, Jackson State, James Madison, Maine, Maryland, Morgan State, Norfolk State, North Carolina A&T, and Virginia Tech.

When reflecting on his future ambitions, Boyd had intended to pursue a career as a computer science engineer after graduating from Liberty University. He credited his mother as his inspiration, acknowledging her unwavering strength and determination. Boyd wrote, “She raised me by herself with no help, and she is the strongest person I know.”

The passing of Tajh Boyd has deeply saddened not only the Liberty Football program but also Conference USA. In a statement, the conference expressed their condolences, saying, “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Liberty Football student-athlete Tajh Boyd. Our thoughts are with the Boyd family and Flames nation during this difficult time.”
