A former University of Southern California campus gynecologist charged with sexually assaulting numerous students was found dead Wednesday in his home, according to his lawyer, Leonard Levine. The AP reports that George Tyndall, who was in his mid-70s, was awaiting trial on 35 criminal counts of sexual misconduct between 2009 and 2016. Tyndall pleaded not guilty in 2019 and was out on bond. On Wednesday, a friend went to Tyndall’s home in Los Angeles after he failed to answer her calls and found him dead in his bed.
While the coroner’s office will conduct an autopsy, Levine stated that there is no evidence of foul play or suicide. Tyndall was scheduled to return to court this month to set a trial date. Levine emphasized that Tyndall always maintained his innocence. Over 700 women came forward to report their allegations to the police, leading to USC agreeing to an $852 million settlement in 2021 with the victims.
During the settlement deposition, Tyndall exercised his right against self-incrimination and did not contribute any money or admit to any wrongdoing. In addition to the settlement, USC agreed to pay $215 million to about 18,000 women who were patients of Tyndall as part of a class-action lawsuit. The allegations against Tyndall were first revealed in a 2018 investigation by the Los Angeles Times, which uncovered complaints dating back to the 1990s. Despite the complaints, Tyndall was only suspended in 2016 when a nurse reported him to a rape crisis center, and he resigned the following year with a substantial payout.
