Tragedy Strikes Grand Prairie Couple on Vacation as Mexico Condo Explosion Claims Their Lives

A tragic incident left a couple from Grand Prairie dead after an explosion in their recently acquired vacation home in Mexico, as reported by their family members.

Gabriel Nunez and Marcela Caballero were in Tulum, Mexico, on Nov. 17, with plans to furnish and decorate their new condo. The following day, the apartment exploded while the couple slept, according to a report by Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV shared by their daughter, Brenda Saldana.

The unfortunate incident resulted in severe injuries for Nunez and Caballero, who were airlifted to a Mexico City hospital. Nunez passed away the day after Thanksgiving, while Caballero succumbed to her injuries on Nov. 29.

“It was all so sudden and a shock to both me and my brother, and right now, we’re just trying to figure out everything on our own,” Saldana told WFAA.

Saldana expressed disbelief as her mother had sent her a video of the renovated apartment shortly before the explosion. “It was a brand-new property, so I never would think that could have happened,” she said to WFAA.

Attorney Juan Hernandez has filed a lawsuit against the property owners of Selva Norte, where the explosion occurred. Gas leaks were reportedly complained about by residents the day before the tragic event.

“Personal injury is almost nonexistent in Mexico, save for a few situations,” Hernandez stated in an interview with WFAA. “This may be one of them where the developers are going to be held liable criminally.”

With a 22-year-old daughter and a 17-year-old son, Nunez and Caballero have left behind a grieving family. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help cover the couple’s medical expenses and funeral costs.

“There is a lot of people in need. This family is certainly one of them,” Hernandez emphasized to WFAA.
