Aug. 18 (UPI) — Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero will make its grand debut at the prestigious 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. This gripping documentary, directed by Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel, takes viewers on an immersive exploration of Lil Nas X’s groundbreaking concert tour.
From September 2022 to March of this year, Lil Nas X astounded audiences with his electrifying performances, and Long Live Montero captures the essence of this transformative period in the artist’s life. The film provides a unique perspective on Lil Nas X’s journey of self-discovery, while addressing complex themes of identity, family, expectations, and acceptance. It puts the spotlight on the important legacy of Black, queer performers.
The official synopsis describes the film as a “triumphant ode to the extraordinary power of self-expression, music, and identity.” TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey expressed his excitement about the documentary, stating, “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero challenges boundaries and reshapes the artistic landscape. Its captivating journey emphasizes the profound impact of Lil Nas X, who fearlessly unites audiences through the universal language of music. We are thrilled to have Lil Nas X at TIFF this year.”
Lil Nas X’s trailblazing career includes hit singles like “Old Town Road,” “Panini,” “Montero (Call Me by Your Name),” and “Industry Baby.” In September 2021, he released his highly acclaimed debut studio album, Montero.
The Toronto International Film Festival, taking place from September 7 to 17, will open with the premiere of Hayao Miyazaki’s new animated feature The Boy and the Heron.
