Top Contenders for Dianne Feinstein Replacement: Oprah Winfrey and Meghan Markle Rumored as Potential Candidates

Oprah Winfrey and Meghan Markle are reportedly under consideration as potential replacements for the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. Both Winfrey and Markle have had their names mentioned in discussions about filling the vacancy, according to sources cited by Newsmax and The Desert Sun. However, Winfrey previously stated in May that she has no intention of pursuing the seat if it becomes available, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. Feinstein passed away at the age of 90, and now all eyes are on Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who will appoint someone to serve the remaining 13 months of Feinstein’s term. Newsom has indicated in the past that he would choose a Black woman to fill the Senate seat in the event of Feinstein’s passing. Rumors of Newsom’s potential 2028 presidential run have also been circulating, further fueling speculation about his choice for the vacant seat. The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has also been mentioned as a potential replacement for Feinstein. Markle and Prince Harry currently reside in Montecito, California. According to a major Democratic donor, Markle’s candidacy may seem unlikely, but, given the unpredictability of US politics, it cannot be completely ruled out. Markle’s name had previously been considered for a US Senate run before the 2020 election when Joe Biden selected Kamala Harris as his running mate. Markle has grown close to Gloria Steinem and has reportedly been networking with key Democrats for a future political campaign. Markle’s interest in politics is said to be significant, but her focus has been primarily on earning income. Newsom has made it clear that he will not choose from the candidates already campaigning for Feinstein’s seat, which will be up for election next year. Among the prominent Black women currently serving in elected office in California, Rep. Barbara Lee is among those vying for the position. However, Newsom’s commitment to honoring his pledge to select a Black woman for the role has been challenged in the aftermath of Feinstein’s death. Many leaders are calling on him to appoint Lee to the post, adding to the complex political dynamics Newsom faces with this decision. Newsom’s choice could risk alienating crucial allies in his home state and impacting any future national campaigns he may undertake. Some possibilities include Secretary of State Shirley Weber and Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell. Lee and others criticized Newsom for suggesting he would choose a caretaker instead of selecting from the current pool of candidates. Lee emphasized that appointing a Black woman solely as a placeholder would be disrespectful to countless Black women who have been instrumental in the Democratic Party’s electoral success. Feinstein received praise from Lee, who referred to her as a champion for their state and a voice for female political revolutionaries. However, Lee did not comment directly on the open seat.
