In early 2023, Ring caused a buzz when it announced that certain features originally included with the purchase of a video doorbell would now require a paid Ring Protect subscription plan. The announcement, made through an update on its support pages, stated, “Starting March 29, 2023, a Ring Protect subscription is required to access Ring Alarm in-app features in the U.S. and Canada, including digital notifications and the ability to Arm and Disarm from your app.”
If you owned a Ring Alarm device before March 29, you would retain these in-app features. However, for those with basic video doorbells but without Ring Alarm, the ability to set “home” and “away” modes to control the behavior of their Ring Video Doorbells was now restricted to subscribers. Previously free, this function now comes with a subscription starting at $3.99 per month or $39.99 per year for an annual payment.
Essentially, a number of features that made Ring Video Doorbells affordable home security systems are now more expensive. If you owned one of these doorbells prior to March 29, you would have lost features you believed you had already paid for, while existing Ring Alarm owners retained all their features. Without a subscription, a Ring Video Doorbell is simply a live video doorbell.
