TikTok Trend: High Schoolers Expressing Gratitude to Their Beloved Teachers with Tattoos

  • Two teenage TikTokers have recently gained viral attention after revealing tattoos dedicated to their favorite teachers.
  • Viewers were deeply moved and praised the impact teachers have on their students’ lives.
  • However, one of the reveal videos has sparked debates about whether this trend crosses appropriate boundaries.

In recent weeks, two TikTok students have gained massive popularity, accumulating a combined total of 56 million views by revealing tattoos that symbolize their appreciation for their beloved teachers.

While this phenomenon has received overwhelming support for teachers, it has also sparked discussions among commenters regarding the appropriateness of such gestures.

In June, a TikToker named @OliviaCarrea shared a video that garnered 39.2 million views, in which she revealed the tattoo she got for her high school teacher who had guided her throughout her journey.

In the video, @OliviaCarrea proudly displays her forearm tattoo, causing her teacher’s surprised reaction before they share an emotional embrace.

In a follow-up video, @OliviaCarrea explains that the tattoo features her teacher’s classroom number, 29, written in Roman numerals, accompanied by the meaningful phrase “your presence matters” in her teacher’s own handwriting. She derived the phrase and font from a graduation letter he had written to her.

Commenters were deeply touched by the video, emphasizing the crucial role teachers play in shaping lives. One commenter wrote, “He tried so hard to maintain professionalism and not invade her personal space, but couldn’t hold back his emotions in the end.” Another remarked, “In that moment, he knew that all the challenging days as a teacher were eternally worthwhile!”

However, some commenters raised concerns about crossing appropriate boundaries. One commenter expressed, “If I did this, my teachers would find it strange,” while another added, “If I did this, my family would demand an investigation into the teacher.”

@OliviaCarrea, who did not respond to Insider’s request for comment, appeared unfazed by the criticism, simply responding with a grateful “Thank you” to a commenter who advised her to ignore the negativity. The commenter wrote, “Don’t let those insinuations of impropriety overshadow the significance of this gesture. Teachers mold minds and change lives.”

I never shared this but during my Senior year I struggled a lot mentally. I didn’t think I was going to make it through. But I met Holton, my favorite teacher who saved me. She always allowed me to come sit in her class if I needed to and would always message me back immediately if I was struggling. On the last day, I asked her to write something on a sticky note without disclosing its purpose. On my birthday, the day before graduation, I got a tattoo and showed it to her during the ceremony, capturing her reaction.

Earlier this month, another TikToker, @Zlyahhhhhrowe, gained viral attention for a similar video featuring the same song used by @OliviaCarrea (Kodaline’s “Brother.”)

In the caption, @Zlyahhhhhrowe shared their own struggle during senior year and how their favorite teacher became their lifeline.

According to @Zlyahhhhhrowe, this teacher always welcomed them into her class whenever they needed support and promptly responded to their messages during difficult times. On the last day of school, @Zlyahhhhhrowe asked their teacher to write something on a sticky note without revealing its purpose. During the graduation ceremony, @Zlyahhhhhrowe surprised her teacher by showing her the tattoo, resulting in an emotional reaction and a heartfelt hug.

The sticky note contained the message, “You’re the best! Love you!” as shared in a photo by @Zlyahhhhhrowe, who did not respond to Insider’s request for comment.

Commenters on this TikTok video expressed overwhelming appreciation for this tribute. “This is beautiful. It seems like she needed this as much as you did!” wrote a top commenter. Another commenter remarked, “You made her feel seen as a teacher while she made you feel seen as a person!! Both of you uplifted each other unknowingly. Beautiful.”
