TikTok Initiates a “Youth Council” to Enhance Teen Safety on the Platform

TikTok recently announced the establishment of a global “Youth Council,” demonstrating its commitment to creating a safer platform for its younger users. Julie de Bailliencourt, TikTok’s global head of product policy, emphasized the importance of listening to teen experiences in order to design effective safety solutions. The formation of the Youth Council will allow TikTok to better represent the safety and well-being needs of teenagers and strengthen its partnership with caregivers.

While the exact timeline for the launch of the Youth Council has not been provided, de Bailliencourt assures that TikTok will prioritize the experiences of its users and make necessary changes to ensure a safe community. Details about the formation and members of the Youth Council are currently unclear.

TikTok has faced criticism for its impact on teenagers, with a recent study showing that potentially harmful content was being pushed to young users on average every 39 seconds. In response, TikTok introduced screen time limits for users under 18 and collaborated with the Boston Children’s Hospital Digital Wellness Lab to set a 60-minute limit. The app also launched a content filtration tool, now available through Family Pairing, giving parents more control over the videos their children see.

Although TikTok has come under scrutiny from U.S. officials and has been banned on government devices, the company maintains that it does not and will not share data with the Chinese government.
