Thunder to Release Kevin Porter Jr. Following Trade with Rockets: Insights and Analysis

The Rockets barred Kevin Porter Jr. from being with the team following his domestic violence arrest in September.

Kevin Porter Jr.’s tenure with the Houston Rockets has reached its end as the team announced a trade agreement on Tuesday with the Oklahoma City Thunder. In addition to Porter, the Rockets also included two second-round draft picks in the deal.

The Thunder promptly announced the agreement and stated that due to Porter’s uncertain future in the NBA due to serious legal issues, he would be waived immediately. To complete the trade, Oklahoma City sent Victor Oladipo and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl to Houston.

The Thunder will receive:

  • Kevin Porter Jr.
  • Two future second-round picks

The Rockets will receive:

  • Victor Oladipo
  • Jeremiah Robinson-Earl

Porter is owed a total of nearly $15.9 million for this season, including an additional $1 million that was guaranteed for next season. The Rockets had already informed Porter that he was effectively prohibited from being with the team following his arrest on domestic violence charges last month.

Porter was arrested in September after allegedly attacking his girlfriend, former WNBA player Kysre Gondrezick, in a New York City hotel room. However, one assault charge against Porter was dropped this week due to insufficient evidence, as reported by the New York Post. He still faces a strangulation charge and another assault charge in connection to the alleged incident and has pleaded not guilty to both charges.

“The allegations against him are deeply troubling,” said Rockets general manager Rafael Stone earlier this month. “As soon as I became aware of the allegations, I informed his representatives that he could not remain part of the Houston Rockets.”

There is no known timetable for Oladipo’s return from a patellar tendon tear he suffered during last season’s playoffs with the Miami Heat.

Oklahoma City also received second-round picks in 2027 and 2028 as part of the trade.
