For much of the first half of the Third Saturday in October rivalry, it looked as if No. 15 Tennessee would score its second consecutive victory over Nick Saban and No. 8 Alabama. The Vols jumped out to a 13-0 lead in short order to start the game, then turned a Jalen Milroe end zone interception into a Joe Milton touchdown before the half to take a 20-7 halftime lead.
It took all of two plays into the second half for Alabama to score, however, and the Crimson Tide didn’t take its foot off the gas, holding the Vols scoreless and scoring 27 points of its own to capture the 34-20 win. Jalen Milroe threw for 220 yards and two touchdowns with one interception, while Jase McLellan rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown.
The Alabama defense stopped Tennessee on three attempted fourth-down conversions, including one late in the game that would have made it a one-score game. The Crimson Tide only forced one turnover, but it was a scoop-and-score in the fourth quarter that put the Tide up by two scores.
