MANILA, Philippines—An overwhelming sense of excitement coursed through Fran Yu’s veins when he was chosen by Northport in the 2023 PBA Draft on Sunday.
But what made the moment truly special for Yu was the fact that his fellow Letran alumni, Brent Paraiso, had also been selected earlier by Batang Pier.
“Of course, we’re thrilled because we’ve reached the next level. It’s even better because Brent is a great teammate, he has a high basketball IQ,” said Yu. “We hope that together, we can lead Northport to victory.”
Paraiso was picked as the fifth selection in the third round by Northport. Both Yu and Paraiso played crucial roles in Letran’s historic three-peat in the NCAA last season.
Paraiso showcased his abilities in his final season at Letran, averaging 10.5 points, four rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game.
Meanwhile, Yu remained focused on his development and emerged as the NCAA Season 95 Finals MVP.
Adding to the intrigue, their former NCAA coach, Bonnie Tan, is now their coach in the professional league as well.
Despite the familiar face, Yu anticipates having a greater role with Batang Pier.
“I expect to take on a more matured role. I’ll seek guidance from the experienced players first and then apply it,” he said.
