Those who seek to appease Putin from both sides of the political spectrum would exacerbate global issues

Vladimir Putin’s actions in supporting totalitarian regimes in neighboring countries, suppressing dissent at home, and engaging in cyber warfare abroad, are truly concerning. Not only did he invade a sovereign nation, but he also targeted innocent civilians with missiles, including hospitals and apartment buildings. To make matters worse, he even kidnapped their children. Recently, the mercenary force that Putin had allowed to build turned against him and marched towards Moscow, posing a threat to Russia’s stability.

Interestingly, some commentators on both the left and the right blame the United States for this situation. They argue that if the US hadn’t encouraged NATO’s expansion, Putin wouldn’t have felt “unsafe.” They also claim that if we hadn’t provided weapons to Ukraine, the war wouldn’t have escalated. Unfortunately, there are even those who believe Putin’s propaganda that Ukraine is not a legitimate country. It is an absurd notion that the actions of the US somehow caused Yevgeny Prigozhin to despair and almost pushed Russia into a civil war.

But we can’t simply focus on our own problems and ignore what’s happening in the rest of the world. As Americans, we cannot adopt an “America first” approach and disregard global affairs. We must acknowledge that the fault lies solely with Vladimir Putin for the chaos and instability we see today. Putin has always seen the dissolution of the Soviet Union as an injustice and the former members as lost sheep.

Since he came into power, he has relentlessly pursued his desire to build another empire. He first took Crimea in 2014 and returned for the rest of Ukraine in 2022. Giving concessions to Putin will never satisfy him; it only emboldens him, as history has shown. Just look at Chamberlain’s appeasement of Hitler before World War II. If we were to let Putin take over Kyiv, he would become an even stronger petrol-dictator with ambitious plans for a superpower status. This would have dire consequences for Western Europe and even China, as they would benefit from a distracted Russia. We cannot afford to let this happen.

While it is true that the downfall of Putin poses its own challenges, including maintaining a united country and securing nuclear weapons, it is something we must address in due time. Putin will not live forever, and appeasing him now will not guarantee a secure future for Russia. We must continue to support Ukraine in their fight for victory and assist in rebuilding their country. Additionally, we should indirectly encourage the moderate factions within Russian society to strive for a better future.

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, we have witnessed a remarkable period of prosperity and peace. The Pax Americana has lifted billions out of poverty and prevented large-scale wars. It is disheartening to see some individuals denying this reality and questioning our moral right. We must be cautious not to fall into the delusion of isolationism, believing that it will solve all our problems. We should always strive for a better world, free from despots like Vladimir Putin.
