Exit, a Japanese company, offers a unique service for employees who wish to resign but dread confronting their boss. The company, which started in 2017, fills a niche in Japan’s labour market, where job-hopping is less common and social conflict is not encouraged. According to co-founder Toshiyuki Niino, Exit was created to relieve people of the “soul-crushing hassle” of quitting their jobs. The company’s resignation services cost about $144 today compared to $450 five years ago, according to media reports. Procedure-wise, Exit calls a worker’s boss on a designated day to inform them that the employee is resigning and will henceforth not be taking phone calls or emails. Although Japanese workers have enough paid leave to cover the two-week notice, Exit’s service seems to have resonated with some discontented employees in Japan. However, not everyone who inquires ultimately signs up. Exit’s service has also spawned several competitors. Unsurprisingly, employers are not thrilled with the service. One manager who received a quitting notice from Exit likened his feelings to that of a hostage situation. Japanese work culture is known for its rigor, as evidenced by the creation of a word, “karoshi,” which refers to death from overwork. Some unhappy workers contemplated suicide at the thought of quitting.
