Third Group of Migrants from Texas Reach Union Station by Bus

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’ office has confirmed that a third bus of migrants arrived at Union Station on Thursday, approximately two weeks after the arrival of a second bus from Texas. Zach Seidl, spokesperson for Bass, stated that the city has been working in collaboration with various departments, nonprofit organizations, and faith partners to implement a plan that was established earlier this year. Upon becoming aware of the latest bus, the city immediately activated their plan.

L.A. Welcomes Collective, a network of immigrant rights organizations, immigration legal service providers, and faith organizations, revealed in a statement that 35 migrants were sent from Brownsville, Texas. This collective closely coordinates with the city and county of Los Angeles to provide support services such as food, clothing, and legal immigration consultations upon arrival. Additionally, they assist in reuniting families if any migrants have loved ones residing in the region.

Kimberley Plotnik, program director for Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project, a member of the collective, emphasized the need for urgent legal services for the arriving families. She highlighted that asylum seekers and those fleeing violence have rights under U.S. immigration law but must present their cases in court. Plotnik called for compassion, respect, and community support in addressing this challenge.

Lindsay Toczylowski, Executive Director of the Immigrant Defenders Law Center, expressed pride in offering legal support to migrants arriving in Los Angeles. Toczylowski appreciated the City of Brownsville for providing advance information about the bus, allowing better preparation to welcome them. The center will continue working with community partners to ensure the dignified reception and fulfillment of migrants’ legal needs.

The first bus of migrants arrived on June 14, followed by a second bus on July 1, carrying 41 and 42 migrants respectively.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently described the state’s border region as “overrun” and hinted at the possibility of more shipments of immigrants. In response, Abbott criticized President Biden’s failure to secure the border and highlighted Los Angeles as a preferred destination for migrants due to its self-declared sanctuary city status. He emphasized that Texas will continue providing relief until the President takes action to secure the border.

In June, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously passed a motion for the drafting of a “Sanctuary City” ordinance, which, once enacted, will prohibit the use of any city resources, property, or personnel for federal immigration enforcement.
