Things to Consider Regarding the European Union’s Recent ETIAS Entry Requirement

The era of unlimited privileges for leisure travel in Europe is coming to an end. Currently, travelers from numerous countries, including the United States, can enter Europe with just their passport and freely explore most of the European Union for stays under 90 days. However, a new entry requirement called the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will be implemented next year. Travelers will need to apply online and pay a small fee.

So, what exactly is ETIAS? It is important to note that ETIAS is not a visa and does not guarantee entry. It is a travel authorization for 30 European countries, including the 27-country Schengen Area, as well as Bulgaria, Romania, and Cyprus. The authorization is valid for three years or until the traveler’s passport expires, allowing for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Who will need to apply for ETIAS? An estimated 1.4 billion people who currently enjoy visa-free travel throughout Europe will be required to apply. This includes travelers of all ages from countries such as Australia, South Korea, Singapore, and the United States. However, nationals of European countries implementing ETIAS will be exempt.

To apply for ETIAS, travelers will need to submit their applications through the ETIAS website or app. The cost for travelers between the ages of 18 and 70 will be 7 euros, while others are not required to pay the fee. Applicants will need to provide passport information, personal details, including contact information and occupation, as well as information about criminal convictions and travel intentions. In most cases, applications will be processed within minutes, but it is recommended to apply well in advance of purchasing tickets or accommodations.

Why is this new requirement being introduced? According to the European Commission, ETIAS is intended for the identification of security risks, irregular migration, or high epidemic risks posed by visa-exempt visitors. The agency states that applicants will be screened against E.U. information systems for border and security purposes. ETIAS can be seen as the European Union’s equivalent of the United States’ Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), which has been in place since 2008.

What if your ETIAS application is delayed or denied? In cases where additional information or documentation is needed, applications may be delayed up to 30 days. Applications can also be denied for various reasons, such as the use of fraudulent passports or if an applicant is deemed a security threat. However, there is an appeals process for those who are denied authorization.

The exact implementation date for ETIAS has not been specified on the ETIAS website, but it is expected to begin next year. It is worth noting that the entry requirement was first proposed in 2016, adopted in 2018, and has faced several delays since then.
