The Unforgettable Encounter: ‘Her Memory Always Haunted Me’ | Life and Style

Long, Black Curly Hair and Lifelong Friendships

In the year 1967, at their primary school in Lakeland, Florida, Lisa’s attention was immediately drawn to Cheryl’s stunning long, black curly hair. Cheryl would often playfully dangle her ponytail on her desk, bringing joy and laughter to their friendship. “She always had a silly side,” Lisa fondly remembers. Even in second grade, when Cheryl broke her arm, Lisa was there to lend a helping hand. “Our teacher asked me to write the answers for Cheryl, and being the smart girl that she is, she also helped me with the answers,” Lisa recalls with gratitude.

Throughout their years together, Cheryl’s outgoing nature balanced Lisa’s reserved disposition. “Cheryl helped me break out of my shell,” Lisa admits. Despite their differences, they remained inseparable, living on the same street, attending primary and high school together. They were always there for each other, whether it was participating in a local community club or being part of their junior high band. They even made sure to catch movies together with their large group of friends.

Their journey continued at the University of Florida, where they coincidentally ended up attending the same college. After their graduation, Cheryl tied the knot, and Lisa proudly stood by her side as one of her bridesmaids. “We were so close that we never even had a fight,” Cheryl happily shares. Their bond extended to their mothers as well. Lisa fondly remembers Cheryl’s mother making the most amazing cheesecake and going the extra mile to bring it to them.

As life progressed, Cheryl and her husband moved to South Florida, where she worked as an editor for an interior design magazine and raised their three children. Eventually, they relocated to Los Angeles, where Cheryl currently runs her own successful party planning business. On the other hand, Lisa’s journey took her to New Zealand in 2002. She had previously spent time in Antarctica working in a science lab and eventually became a researcher in palliative care.

Despite the distance, Lisa and Cheryl initially managed to stay in touch. However, as their lives got busier and the time zone differences became more challenging, they slowly drifted apart. Nevertheless, Cheryl never stopped thinking about Lisa. Then, in 2022, tragedy struck as Lisa’s mother passed away. Although they were not connected at the time, Cheryl saw a Facebook post from Lisa’s sister, Alison, sharing the news. Overwhelmed with emotions, Cheryl reached out to Alison in an attempt to find Lisa. Mrs. Williams had been an important part of Cheryl’s life, and she eagerly wanted to offer her condolences.

In a dream, Cheryl saw Lisa’s mother. “She was in the kitchen making those southern boiled peanuts, which she used to make. She had a smile on her face and gave me a big hug,” Cheryl recounts. Alison provided Cheryl with Lisa’s phone number, and through WhatsApp, the long-lost friends reconnected. Their first call was filled with laughter, as if no time had passed at all. In August 2022, Lisa booked a flight to visit Cheryl in LA. The reunion felt incredibly meaningful to Lisa, knowing that her mother had cherished Cheryl deeply. She believes that her mother’s spirit guided Cheryl to reach out, as Cheryl has always had a certain psychic intuition.

Cheryl appreciates how technology has played a role in bringing them back together. “With just a touch of a button, I can reach Lisa. The first time we spoke again, my ribs hurt from laughing so much,” Cheryl joyfully expresses. Over the years, we encounter many loves, but if we’re lucky, we find someone who stays by our side through it all. Lisa and Cheryl have that special bond. They share the same aches and pains, experiencing life’s transitions together. As Lisa puts it, they get to be “wise old ladies” in each other’s company, while Cheryl continues to infuse their lives with fun and laughter.
