In the wake of the indictments against former President Donald J. Trump for conspiring to undermine the 2020 election, his aides and allies were surprised by a social media post from the leading Republican candidate inviting people to a news conference.
“I will present a comprehensive, detailed, and undeniable report on the election fraud in Georgia at a major news conference in Bedminster, New Jersey on Monday at 11:00 A.M. This report will conclusively prove the innocence of myself and others,” Mr. Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, just before 9 a.m.
According to insiders, the report in question is a document of over 100 pages, compiled at least in part by Liz Harrington, a Trump communications aide who staunchly believes in his false claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 election.
The document primarily focuses on alleged voting anomalies in Georgia during the 2020 campaign, as insisted by critics of the election. It has been in development for several weeks, according to one source.
Ms. Harrington has been reaching out to individuals outside of Mr. Trump’s campaign regarding the event. She posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) four hours after the announcement.
“Georgia consistently experiences some of the most corrupt elections in the country, and things have only worsened since 2020! Tune in on Monday!” she wrote.
When contacted, Ms. Harrington declined to comment. She was also present in a key scene described in Mr. Trump’s first federal indictment related to mishandling classified documents.
In the summer of 2021, she was with Mr. Trump at his residence in Bedminster, N.J., where he was recorded going through papers and discussing a sensitive military document. She is believed to be one of the women heard speaking in a recording of that conversation.
Many of Mr. Trump’s past claims of fraud in Georgia have already been debunked, and it remains uncertain what the contents of the mentioned report will be. Additionally, it is unclear if the news conference will proceed on Monday, as the club is expected to be closed and only hosting private events.
Governor Brian Kemp, a Republican from Georgia, swiftly denounced Mr. Trump’s comments.
“The 2020 election in Georgia was not stolen,” wrote Governor Kemp. “For nearly three years, no one has come forward with evidence of fraud that can be proven in a court of law. Our elections are secure, accessible, and fair, and will remain so as long as I am governor. Our focus should be on the future of our country in 2024.”
Mr. Trump’s post on Truth Social comes at a time when his legal team and advisors are increasingly concerned about his public statements regarding the four criminal indictments he is facing. The judge presiding over his federal case has already cautioned against making inflammatory remarks that could jeopardize witnesses or the jury pool.
By dedicating an entire news conference to baseless claims about the 2020 election, Mr. Trump is contradicting the efforts made by his allies and advisors to minimize his focus on a subject that has proven to be politically damaging, especially after the poor performance of candidates he endorsed in the 2022 midterm elections.
