The Sports Department of New York Times Gets Discontinued

In a strategic move, the renowned publication, The New York Times, has made the decision to disband its sports department. Instead, it will rely on the coverage provided by the website, the Athletic, which it acquired last year for a staggering $550 million. According to the Times, this transition will affect over 35 employees from the sports department. However, the newspaper assures that these journalists will be reassigned to other roles within the newsroom, and no layoffs are planned. In a letter to the staff, Times Chairman AG Sulzberger and CEO Meredith Kopit Levien explained that while some may be disappointed by this decision, they firmly believe it is the right move for their readers, as reported by the AP.

Joe Kahn, the executive editor of the New York Times, and Monica Drake, a deputy managing editor, stated in a memo to the staff that their future focus will be on delivering distinctive, high-impact news and enterprise journalism centered around the influence of sports on money, power, culture, politics, and society as a whole. They also disclosed that the coverage of games, players, teams, and leagues will be scaled back in the newsroom, as outlined in an article by the Wall Street Journal.

The New York Times had announced its acquisition of the Athletic early last year as part of its strategy to expand its paying subscriber base amidst the decline of the newspaper print ads business. The Wall Street Journal highlights that there had been previous conflicts between the publications, such as the Athletic allowing its staff of approximately 400 members to vote in sports hall of fame ballots, which the Times had forbidden.
