Recent developments indicate a significant decline in the quality of life in the city, as open-air prostitution continues to spread across different neighborhoods. Despite the efforts of Mayor Eric Adams and the NYPD, the situation remains largely unchanged.
Last month, The Post reported the presence of a thriving illegal sex market in Corona, Queens. Now, another report reveals that the problem has extended to East New York, Brooklyn, where prostitutes solicit customers along Sheffield Avenue in the early morning.
Even landlords are unable to address the issue through legal channels.
In the past, corrupt police officers would turn a blind eye in exchange for bribes. Today, lenient district attorneys and diluted laws make it unlikely for the offenders to face prosecution.
Sonia Ossorio, the executive director of the progressive National Organization of Women/NYC, expresses her belief that the lack of enforcement is due to the fact that law enforcement officers have no incentive to act, knowing that sympathetic district attorneys won’t pursue charges.
This tolerant attitude towards disorder is not limited to district attorneys. Progressive lawmakers’ leniency has resulted in a rise in various offenses, including fare evasion, public urination, shoplifting, and now even prostitution, throughout the city.
In response to The Post’s report on the “Market of Sweethearts” in Queens, Mayor Adams mentioned that City Hall was forming an operation to address the issue but provided no specifics. He acknowledged that sex work is not without victims and expressed his opposition to legalization.
Unfortunately, even landlords are finding it difficult to combat this scourge. Inchul Chang, for example, has been diligently gathering evidence of the illicit activities taking place in his building for months. Despite presenting photos and videos as proof, a judge in Queens allowed one of the operators to continue operating while awaiting trial.
Until New York’s legislators strengthen laws against prostitution, sex trafficking, and the customers involved, law enforcement will continue to play a never-ending game of whack-a-mole.
Perhaps Mayor Adams and the NYPD should consider heeding Bob McManus’ advice and reactivate vice squads or establish a task force dedicated to targeting brothel owners and assisting landlords in eliminating these businesses from their properties.
We must put a stop to this regression back to the “bad old days” before it’s too late.
