The Saudis’ wealth proved more influential than morality, says Richard Curran.

The professional golf world has been shaken up by the creation of a new umbrella entity, funded mainly by the Saudi government, which brings together what were once three separate tours. The announcement has led to some big names being lured away from their former tours by huge financial incentives, with Tiger Woods reportedly being offered $800m to switch. However, questions have been raised about the deals and the morality of accepting money from a regime that is accused of human rights abuses and of committing atrocities in Yemen. Critics of the new entity argue that sport should be about more than just money, and that a series of ethical compromises have been made in order to attract wealthy sporting stars.
