While the exact origin of the term “honey badgers” for Gen Alpha is unclear, it has long been used to describe individuals who display indifference or dominance over others. The phrase “honey badgers don’t care” went viral a decade ago as part of an internet meme featuring the animal.
TikTok user @ThatPsychNP popularized the current usage of the phrase, regularly posting videos about “Gen Alpha honey badgers” since at least August 2022. The term has gained significant traction in recent months as other TikTokers started adopting it.
In one of her videos, @ThatPsychNP, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, explained why she refers to Gen Alpha kids as “honey badgers” in an October 2022 video.
“Our little nuggets are ready to take on anyone because they are different and unafraid,” she said, emphasizing that these kids were born with a fearless attitude.
The creator has shared numerous videos duetting clips of Gen Alpha children, showcasing their unique behavior. For instance, one video featured a young girl adamantly refusing to let go of a raccoon she was holding. Another clip from June showed a young girl enthusiastically running towards a bear.
Many of her videos feature Gen Alpha kids interacting with animals in both peculiar and adorable ways. In one video, a young boy hilariously runs around a trampoline while holding a snake like a horse. The child’s apparent father jokingly expressed concern for the snake.
This week, another TikToker and millennial mother, @thespecialmagnolia, made a popular video stating that the phrase accurately captures her 5-year-old daughter’s behavior. She argued that these “beautiful psychos” possess more passion, conviction, and confidence in their little fingers than any activist or politician currently on the stage.
@Thespecialmagnolia clarified that all the intensity comes from a place of empathy.
“I’ve been saying this about my own child since she was very young: she could either run the country or a prison gang, depending on how she feels that day,” she quipped.
The comments on her video are filled with fellow young mothers humorously agreeing with the assessment and sharing their own anecdotes.
“My little honey badger is a spirited, lovable, and empathetic boy,” one commenter wrote. “He once told his great uncle, ‘We don’t yell. We talk it out.'”
“My honey badger said, ‘Hey, don’t talk over me,’ to her 75-year-old great uncle and then told him he should apologize,” another added.
