The PGA’s Struggles: An Editorial Perspective

It’s no secret that many professional sports organizations operate on a moral code that is about as reliable as a coral reef or jungle. FIFA, the NFL, and others may talk a good game about tradition, but ultimately, these entities exist to enrich a select few already-wealthy individuals and their lackeys. The proposed merger between the Professional Golf Association (PGA) and the LIV Golf tour, financially backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, takes this hypocrisy to new heights.

PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan was the architect of the deal, which apparently took shape in secret. The merger aims to create a new entity that combines the PGA’s nonprofit status with LIV’s for-profit structure. This development raises eyebrows, especially considering that federal regulators are already scrutinizing golf’s financial model.

To add insult to injury, Mr. Monahan and the PGA were highly critical of Saudi Arabia’s dismal human rights record and the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. However, their moral high ground quickly crumbled when they chose to partner with a fund directly linked to the country’s leadership.

Mr. Monahan even made an attempt to exploit the families of 9/11 victims, embracing them as part of his campaign against LIV last year. Yet now, he readily admits to using them as “pawns in a business negotiation.” The families have responded by calling him and the PGA “paid Saudi shills” who have betrayed the memories of their loved ones.

While the merger still requires approval from the tour’s policy board, this does not bode well for Mr. Monahan’s credibility. It seems he is banking on the shamelessness and greed of the majority of its members to push this through. Only time will tell how this will all play out.
