The Operational Approach of the Southern Poverty Law Center

The recent report released by the Southern Poverty Law Center claims that there are 1,225 hate and anti-government groups in America, resulting in fear and pain within the Black, brown, and LGBTQ communities. These groups are listed on the SPLC’s “hate map.” I used to have faith in the center, as many well-meaning people still do, considering that Apple once donated $1 million to them. However, what donors may not be aware of is that the SPLC now unjustly tarnishes the reputation of not only “haters,” but also good-hearted individuals.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who grew up Muslim in Somalia, has now become a critic of radical Islam and occasionally associates herself with American conservatives. The center has included her on their list. Moreover, the Family Research Council has also been unjustly targeted by the SPLC. Although I may have my disagreements with the council, labeling them as a “hate group” is unfounded. Jerry Boykin, the council’s Executive Vice President, emphasizes that the center includes organizations on its list simply based on political disagreements.

The SPLC claims that these groups cause fear and pain among the Black, brown, and LGBTQ communities. However, the council merely opposes gay marriage, a stance shared by prominent figures such as Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton. Shockingly, one individual, driven by the SPLC’s writings, went to the council’s headquarters with the intention of killing people. Fortunately, a security guard managed to stop him after being shot. Boykin reveals that the attacker confessed to wanting to kill as many council members as possible due to their classification as a “hate group.”

The Ruth Institute, a Christian organization that believes adoption agencies should prioritize placing children with straight couples, has also faced the SPLC’s stigmatization. Speaking to Jennifer Morse, the President of the Ruth Institute, I accused her of being “a hater.” However, Morse clarifies that she harbors no animosity towards gay individuals. Her main concern is ensuring that children are placed in the best environment, which, in her opinion, often involves a married mother and father. Nevertheless, the SPLC’s inclusion of the institute on its hate map led to their bank severing ties with them, citing their promotion of hate and violence.

The Ruth Institute and the Family Research Council remain on the SPLC’s hate list without any possibility of appeal. Morse expresses her frustration, questioning how one can be removed from such a list. Another organization, Moms for Liberty, has recently been added to the hate map. I suspect that the SPLC intentionally keeps its list long in order to attract significant funding. Shockingly, some individuals within the SPLC earn salaries exceeding $400,000 annually, surpassing Morse’s entire budget. This suggests that the organization prioritizes fundraising efforts.

Harper’s Magazine once reported that the SPLC is the wealthiest civil rights group in America, devoting most of its time and resources to raising additional funds. Initially, the SPLC claimed it would cease fundraising efforts once its endowment reached $55 million. However, it soon raised the goal to $100 million, using the excuse that it would enable them to stop expensive fundraising campaigns. Yet, even after reaching $100 million, the SPLC continued gathering funds, accumulating $200 million, then $400 million, and now boasting a staggering $730 million. Despite this, they continue to seek donations, and Boykin alleges that a substantial amount is held in offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, which is evident within the center’s tax forms.

Incredibly, the SPLC now targets groups like Moms for Liberty and Moms for America, labeling them as anti-government extremists simply because these groups oppose explicit content in schools and strive to represent parental opinions on school boards. It’s truly ludicrous. The SPLC includes Moms for America on its hate map, but they neglect to include Antifa, a hate group known for physically assaulting individuals with right-wing beliefs. The Southern Poverty Law Center has become a hate group itself, exhibiting left-wing tendencies and engaging in opportunistic fundraising while engaging in smear campaigns.
