A large portion of the American population lacks proper knowledge about artificial intelligence and its implications for the world. To shed some light on the subject, Vice President Harris offers her insights, stating, “It’s important to understand that AI is essentially machine learning, a sophisticated application of technology.”
Expanding on her definition, Vice President Harris emphasizes the significance of the data input into the machine, as it determines the outcomes and decisions produced by the AI system.
If Vice President Harris’ explanation left you feeling confused, let me simplify it for you. Artificial intelligence is a product of human-created advanced computer technology. However, if it falls into the wrong hands, it can have disastrous consequences.
Throughout history, humanity has been cautious regarding advanced technology, and rightfully so. The fear of nuclear power falling into the wrong hands has led to strict controls on the dissemination of information that could potentially fuel the creation of atomic weapons. Even with these measures in place, the world remains apprehensive about the possibility of countries like North Korea or Iran acquiring destructive technology capable of endangering the entire planet.
UNDERSTANDING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)
However, the challenge with artificial intelligence lies in the fact that the technology is already accessible to those who may misuse it. The potential for devastating and harmful applications of AI may outweigh any positive uses.
The National Crime Agency (NCA), responsible for combating organized crime in the United Kingdom, has issued a warning. They have observed a concerning trend: the use of AI to generate explicit images of children, leading to increased normalization of pedophilia and disturbing behavior against minors. Unfortunately, this issue is not unique to the UK, as experts indicate a similar epidemic of pedophiles using AI to produce realistic yet fake explicit images in the United States.
The implications are twofold. Law enforcement will face difficulties distinguishing real images from AI-generated ones as the volume of these images inundates the system. Additionally, experts worry that these lifelike fake images could normalize child sexual abuse, potentially increasing actual attacks on children.
POPE EXPRESSES CONCERN ABOUT ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND THE “LOGIC OF VIOLENCE”
As if that weren’t enough, the NCA estimates that up to 830,000 adults in the UK, approximately 1.6% of the adult population, pose a sexual threat to children. This number is ten times greater than the entire prison population of the UK. Are we paying attention?
At Southern Evangelical Seminary, we recognize the inherent sinfulness of mankind’s nature. Left to their own devices, humans tend to deviate from God rather than seek Him. Being a follower of Christ requires intentional and thoughtful action, as opposed to apathetic acceptance of misguided notions of truth and love.
Our children and families face an unprecedented onslaught of evil. If we, as God’s people, do not firmly stand in the truth of the Gospel, our children’s minds, bodies, and souls will be consumed by wicked individuals.

Evil may be partly to blame, but as real, non-artificial intelligent men who identify as Christians, we must also be held accountable if we fail to protect our children from this onslaught of diabolical forces. As the old hymn implores us, “Rise up, O men of God, be done with lesser things. Give heart and mind and soul and strength to serve the King of Kings.”
If not now, then when?
