Arriving on stage in an unconventional manner, rolling in a wheelie bin and clad in doctors’ attire, the band kicked off their performance at Glasgow Green with the track “Looking For Somebody (To Love)” from their latest album, “Being Funny In A Foreign Language.” Frontman Matty Healy shared that Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi was watching from backstage, acknowledging him as a good friend. Capaldi, who recently announced a hiatus from live performances due to mental health concerns, was also seen among the festival crowd on Saturday evening at LF Soundsystem. Healy further revealed that his band, formed in 2002, will be taking over as headliner at the Reading and Leeds festival in place of Capaldi. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and their love for Glasgow.
Before performing the song “Love Me,” Healy took a moment to reflect on his past struggles with substance abuse, emphasizing the difference he feels now that he is clean. He expressed his elation and appreciation for the audience, stating that the experience meant a lot to the band. The main stage at Trnsmt Festival also featured performances by rock duo Royal Blood and pop star Becky Hill. On the King Tut’s stage, Tom Clarke, frontman of The Enemy, shared a personal anecdote about purchasing his first guitar at the Barrowlands market.
Trnsmt Festival first took place in 2017, filling the void left by the discontinuation of T in the Park. Over the course of the three-day music event, approximately 50,000 attendees enjoyed the performances. On Sunday, Police Scotland confirmed that 14 arrests had been made during the first two days of the festival.
