The Latest TikTok Trend Embracing the Hot Girl Summer Vibe

  • A new micro-trend is emerging on TikTok for young women: Introducing the “rat girl summer” movement.
  • Rat girl summer encourages wild partying and spending time outdoors at all hours of the day.
  • TikToker @lolaokola, who coined the term, urges everyone to embrace the rodent energy.

Hot girl summer has come to a close, making way for its untamed counterpart.

“Rat girl summer” is the latest TikTok micro-trend empowering young women to embrace their inner city rat this summer: Roaming the streets at all hours, indulging in any and all snacks, and living without inhibitions.

“We’re having a rat girl summer, OK?” declared TikToker Lola Kolade in a viral video on June 4, which has garnered over 4 million views. “We’re scurrying around the streets, nibbling on snacks, and fearlessly venturing into places we have no business being in. Embrace the rodent energy.” Kolade is credited with originating the term and has since shared additional TikToks explaining the fundamentals of “rat girl summer” and how to fully experience it.

In a subsequent TikTok posted a day later, Kolade outlined the four main qualities of rat girl summer: Going outside (“You can’t scurry in bed,” she emphasized), giving in to any food cravings, rejecting embarrassment and self-consciousness, and avoiding overthinking.

“Do you think a rat hesitates before stealing a slice of pizza?” she asked, evoking memories of New York City’s famous Pizza Rat.

Young women on the platform expressed their amusement and felt empowered by the rat girl summer movement.

“This is actually very inspiring,” remarked one top commenter. “Love this! I’m all about rat girl summer,” exclaimed another.

Since then, numerous creators have jumped on the trend. On August 3, TikToker @briannaseewald0 shared her personal take on rat girl summer, which involves trying to maintain beauty and lifestyle routines but also being fine with disregarding them occasionally.

“It’s a rat girl thing, but I firmly believe that bras and jeans don’t need to be washed after every use,” she joked.

“Rat girl summer” is just one of the many labels TikTokers have come up with to describe lifestyle habits of young women. In July, we were introduced to “girl dinner,” the concept of assembling random assortments of food and snacks for a meal.

The trend of adding “girl” to various labels has become so popular that it has spawned self-referential parodies, such as “tomato girl,” “baked beans girl,” or “hard-boiled egg girls,” which seemingly hold little significance.

Regardless, we bid an electrifying farewell to rat girl summer to all those who choose to partake! Scurry responsibly.
