The Late Show: David Letterman makes his first appearance since 2015 in an engaging appearance on Colbert

On Monday night, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” featured a long-awaited guest: former host David Letterman. Letterman, who hosted the show from 1993 to 2015, made his first appearance at the Ed Sullivan Theater since his retirement eight years ago.

The audience welcomed Letterman with enthusiastic applause as he sat down with Colbert. “Stephen, control your people!” Letterman joked. “This is the most enthusiastic audience I have been near since the night I announced I was quitting.”

Letterman expressed delight at being back and commented on the changes at the theater since his departure. “It’s like a mall! It’s unbelievable. It’s like Rodeo Drive,” he said. The comedian also mentioned that his dressing room was nicer than any hotel he’d ever stayed in.

Having hosted over 4,000 episodes of “The Late Show,” Letterman expressed missing “everything” about hosting and the opportunity it provided to keep trying until you get it right.

Although Letterman had previously stated it would be too difficult for him to return to “The Late Show,” on Monday night, he returned to the most familiar part of the theater, joining Colbert behind the host’s desk to recreate a selfie they took in 2014.

The episode was filled with humor and nostalgia, showcasing Letterman’s enduring wit and charm.
