The Issue of Vacant Housing: Beyond Neglected Homes, a Neglect of Responsibility

In Ireland, we are fortunate that we do not have the unfortunate situation of having 80,000 vacant properties headed towards decay with no plan for revival. This would be a clear dereliction of duty at the government level. It is imperative that Ireland strives for better.

Virgin Media is currently falling short in its coverage of the World Athletics Championship in Budapest. As a public service broadcaster, RTÉ has always provided coverage of major sporting events with insights from expert panels. However, Virgin Media is only providing a world feed without any input from Irish athletes. It is important that Virgin Media finds the talent to provide commentary and a panel for this event.

The RTÉ and Ryan Tubridy controversy has become tiresome for many. If Tubridy’s departure leads to a shift in the higher-paid stars being replaced, it may be for the better. In the past, former top earners at RTÉ have realized that the station continues to thrive without them. While I have little sympathy for Tubridy, I feel for the staff members who may suffer because of a problem that is not of their making. It is crucial that the new RTÉ director general, Kevin Bakhurst, is given the opportunity to bring the organization back to reality and implement realistic pay structures. This issue extends beyond RTÉ and is likely prevalent in other large organizations throughout the country.

The controversy surrounding RTÉ and its former top presenter Ryan Tubridy would make for an interesting stage production. Creating a musical, like “Tubs, the Musical,” would serve as a reflection on the issue. It should be a light-hearted and comedic production rather than a serious one.

Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have been slowly eroding Irish neutrality by allowing war planes to refuel at Shannon and pushing for EU deployment of the defense forces. This threatens Ireland’s historical skepticism towards military blocs. As a small country, Ireland would have no influence on decisions made elsewhere, making this shift dangerous for the country’s interests.

The Bishop of Elphin’s comments on racism in Irish society are commendable. The story of the Canaanite Woman seeking healing for her possessed daughter in the Bible is an important reminder that God loves all of his children regardless of their color, race, creed, or sex. As believers, we should follow suit and not differentiate among people based on these factors.

The Farmers’ Alliance (FA) is a new addition to the alphabet soup of Irish farming organizations. While they focus on repairing the image of farmers, it is important to remember that rural Ireland is not solely made up of farmers. Many non-farming individuals also live and work in the countryside, and they face their own set of issues that affect their quality of life. These issues include poor road infrastructure, lack of digital connectivity, limited social services, and improper rural development planning. It is important to recognize that the farming community is part of the Irish population and deserves to be heard, but they should not be exempt from scrutiny. Society is currently engaging in debates about these issues as Ireland looks towards long-term development and addressing climate emergencies.
