Detroit — The 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ introduces GM’s innovative “cockpit experience” for electric vehicles, inspired by the world of gaming. According to Mike Hichme, a design expert for GM, the combination of the exterior and the interior now plays a crucial role in the overall design of a vehicle, with the digital experience being a significant part of it.
Gone are the days of traditional dashboards filled with dials and gauges. Touchscreens are taking over, transforming the driving experience. “Gaming has heavily influenced not just the digital content displayed on the screens but also the controls, such as the steering wheel controls, which draw inspiration from video game controllers,” explained Hichme.
The upcoming Cadillac Celestiq, another electric vehicle from the brand, will take this concept even further by replacing the traditional dashboard with a video wall that stretches across the front cabin.
In a similar vein, the 2024 Ford Mustang will utilize the same system used to develop the popular video game Fortnite, powering its screens. “It’s the brain of the car,” said Marti Romances, co-founder and creative director of Territory Studio, a San Francisco-based design firm. Romances emphasized that cars require the same level of visual storytelling found in movies and games to communicate complex information in a universally understandable manner.
However, manufacturers are conscious of the potential distractions caused by these screens and take measures to ensure user safety. GM, for instance, performs distraction tests before their vehicles hit the road. Hichme explained that they minimize the number of steps or features accessible while driving to prevent distractions, keeping the enabled features to a minimum.
Kelly Funkhouser, manager of vehicle technology for Consumer Reports, has conducted reviews of such display-heavy vehicles, focusing on safety analysis. Funkhouser expressed concerns regarding the screens drawing the driver’s attention away from the road, emphasizing the importance of driver engagement and awareness.
