The Impact of Bullying, School Shootings, Terrorism, and COVID-19 Struggles on Gen Z

Beware, for the wrath of Gen Z shall be upon you if you dare to express any form of hatred towards our beloved Korean idol group, favorite song, or treasured Wattpad book. In the year 2023, you may find us, masked yet unyielding, capturing selfies on the streets, dancing to the hottest TikTok trends, or sharing our McDonald’s meal of six-piece chicken nuggets, fries, and iced coffee on Facebook and Instagram. Despite the seemingly mundane nature of our excitement, we have blurred the boundaries between affection and love, truth and fiction, and our public and private lives.

We are a generation that holds fewer religious affiliations, yet grapples with significant mental health challenges. However, we are also a generation where women willingly offer their seats to men, consent is prioritized and emphasized, and trans women can compete alongside naturally-born females in pageants. Our time has ushered in a greater understanding and acceptance of fluidity surrounding gender and sex.

Within our own little worlds, some of us surf the internet, listen to music, sleep, or simply do nothing at all. This is the essence of Gen Z – minding our own business because within each individual’s world, there lies an aspiring artist, a future doctor, a scientist working towards finding the cure for HIV or cancer, or an engineer with dreams of constructing bridges that span the globe, eliminating the need for air travel.

Though our generation has been shaped by the hardships of bullying, school shootings, terrorism, and the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, we remain resilient, competitive, and focused on building a better future. Previous generations have made decisions on our behalf, leading us to the current battles against climate change, thinning ozone layers, recurrent typhoons, and corrupt leadership. Despite the daunting changes we face, we exercise our right to vote while advocating for divorce legalization and policies that strive for universal healthcare. We may come across as sensitive, but we refuse to perpetuate the toxic cycle of siding with the oppressor. We vow to continuously fight for the most vulnerable among us – the least, the last, and the lost.

This is the narrative of Gen Z – a generation easily offended by sexism, misogyny, and inequality. Yet we face resistance and backlash when demanding accountability from the generations that came before us. Despite these challenges, we hold onto hope. Our time is defined by finding joy in the simplest of things, without the need to romanticize our resilience. We endure pain and loss, but we also seek positive change. We embrace even the smallest victories amidst an ocean of fear and uncertainty.
