The Government’s incoherence should not burden Conservative councillors

Wandsworth, a borough in London, is widely regarded as a model Conservative council. It has a lower Band D council tax compared to neighbouring Labour-run Lambeth, and the residents are generally satisfied with its services. Despite the fluctuations in the Conservative party’s overall performance in the capital, Wandsworth has consistently voted Tory.

However, in today’s local elections, there is concern among some Conservatives that this winning streak may come to an end. The Tory Government’s record, which has embraced policies more reminiscent of high-tax socialism, may result in the council being ousted from power. It’s a scenario where local elections often punish a party for its national actions, overshadowing their local achievements. Today’s vote is expected to reflect not just on local services but also on the partygate scandal and the Government’s mishandling of the cost of living crisis.

Forecasts suggest that the Conservative Party may face significant losses in the “blue wall” – traditionally Tory areas that have shown a shift away from the party in recent years. While some attribute this shift to demographic changes and local conflicts over issues like housing development, there’s more to it than just that.

The Government lacks attractive offerings for aspirational voters who have long been the backbone of Tory support. It finds itself in a predicament with an increase in National Insurance contributions, intended to fund an unreformed health service that struggles to meet public expectations. It rarely applies Conservative principles to problems like the unreasonably high cost of energy, instead flirting with Left-wing ideas like windfall taxes, eroding their distinctive appeal to the electorate.

The Conservative councillors should not bear the brunt of the Government’s negligence. By and large, Tory councils are better managed than their Labour counterparts and impose lower rates of council tax. Like Wandsworth, they understand the value of good governance, competence, and consistency, which resonate with the electorate. If only the party in Westminster shared the same understanding.
