The focus has shifted from illness to testing amidst this current pandemic

There’s a growing contradiction in the UK’s approach to Covid, as highlighted by Allison Pearson, a columnist for The Telegraph and co-host of the popular podcast, Planet Normal.

Pearson suggests that while the government is starting to lift measures and no longer requiring asymptomatic individuals who test positive on a lateral flow test to take a confirmatory PCR test, they are also hesitant to let people think that Covid is now akin to a common cold for most individuals. This indicates that they are aware that the situation is not as severe as it once was.

She points out the staff shortages across various industries and argues that it is no longer justifiable for people to take a secondary test and be off work. The UK, after successfully implementing a widely-praised vaccine rollout, is now facing what Pearson calls a “pandemic of testing” rather than a pandemic of illness.

Liam Halligan, Pearson’s podcast co-host and another columnist at The Telegraph, highlights the stark difference in testing between the UK and Germany. According to Halligan, the UK is conducting ten times more tests than Germany, which he finds astonishing. He questions why journalists haven’t posed this question to the Prime Minister, Jonathan Van-Tam, or Chris Whitty.
