The Amazon jungle’s harrowing crash on May 1 resulted in the miraculous survival of four Indigenous children who were found 40 days later. Unfortunately, the bodies of the three adults, including the children’s mother, were retrieved in the area. Lesly Jacobombaire Mucutuy, the eldest of the children, revealed that their mother survived for four days after the crash. She likely urged the children to leave the wreckage site and save themselves before her demise.
Although the rescued children are recovering at a hospital in Bogota, family members reported that some of them, including the 13-year-old Lesly, feel restless and want to resume activities. Meanwhile, the children’s uncle, Fidencio Valencia, said that one of them stated they hid in tree trunks to shield themselves from jungle animals, snakes, and mosquitoes while they were starving. Fidencio updated that the children ate a little but mostly spent their time drawing and recovering from the experience.
The Cessna single-engine propeller plane carrying the children and their mother crashed due to engine failure during their trip from the Amazonian village of Araracuara to San Jose del Guaviare. Dairo Juvenal Mucutuy, another uncle, said one of the kids expressed a desire to walk, but his feet hurt. The children survived on cassava flour, fruits in the rainforest, and some seeds. They are members of the Huitoto Indigenous group.
Despite the complex terrain of the rainforest, a rescue team located the children just 3 miles from the crash site in a forest clearing. The rescue team had previously passed within 20 to 50 meters (66 to 164 feet) of the children on several occasions but missed them. The Colombian army sent 150 soldiers with dogs, and dozens of Indigenous volunteers participated in the search.
The Colombians celebrated the successful rescue of the children and thanked the medical team, military officials, and Indigenous communities for their efforts. The government recognizes how their combined efforts resulted in such a positive outcome and demonstrated that they can work together despite their conflicts.
