Incomplete or biased datasets can hinder objectivity, and biases within development teams can perpetuate this cycle of bias. Nabil Manji, head of crypto and Web3 at Worldpay by FIS, explains that the quality of AI products is determined by the data they have access to and the strength of their language models. In financial services, backend data systems are often fragmented and lack uniformity, limiting the effectiveness of AI-driven products compared to other industries.

In banking, it becomes difficult to identify biases when different factors contribute to the decision-making process. For example, fintech startups may prioritize lending to foreigners but overlook deserving individuals working at prestigious companies due to biases in the local banking system.

Generative AI is not typically used for determining credit scores or consumer risk assessment. Instead, it is primarily utilized for processing unstructured data, such as classifying transactions, to improve the quality of traditional underwriting models.

Proving AI-based discrimination is challenging due to the opacity of decision-making processes and the limited knowledge individuals have about how AI systems work. This makes it difficult to detect and address instances of discrimination until significant damage has already been done.

Rumman Chowdhury, a former head of machine learning ethics at Twitter, suggests the need for a global regulatory body to address the risks associated with AI. She highlights concerns about misinformation, biases embedded in AI algorithms, and the potential for AI-generated “hallucinations” to undermine the integrity of information available online.

Meaningful regulation of AI is needed urgently, but the implementation of regulatory proposals like the European Union’s AI Act may take time. Transparency, accountability, independent complaints processes, periodic audits, and involving racially diverse communities in the design and deployment of AI technologies are essential steps toward addressing AI biases.
