Ryan falls into the latter category, refusing to stand up to the Trumpian forces within the party. By being complicit rather than opposing, figures like Ryan weaken the party and lack the conviction, confidence, and strength needed to lead.
Throughout Trump’s presidency, Ryan and his fellow Republicans celebrated policy victories achieved under Trump’s leadership, yet distanced themselves from his shortcomings. But while the policy wins were credited to Ryan and his side of the party, the disgraceful moments were solely associated with Trump. People like Ryan may feel a twinge of conscience over Trump’s behavior, but the MAGA crowd seems unfazed.
As a result, Trump is now on track for renomination, much to the disappointment of those conservatives who expected him to fade away. However, aside from a few exceptions, none of his so-called opponents have truly stood up to him. Attempting to imitate Trump’s style or criticize him mildly won’t win over the Republican base. People prefer the original villain over the accommodating accomplice.
Furthermore, with each new criminal indictment or controversy, Trump seems to solidify his hold on power and convince his followers that he is the target of a deep-state conspiracy. This makes it challenging for any potential challenger to change the dynamic of the Republican race.
If figures like Paul Ryan want to make a compelling case against Trump, they should focus on his irredeemable character and the damage he has done to the party’s values and reputation. It’s not about his electability; it’s about his shameful actions, his disregard for the Constitution, and his betrayal of Republican principles. Only by confronting the truth, even when it’s difficult, can the party hope to find redemption.
