When Isaac Leon Archuleta and Joseph Daniel Jones reunited after a four-year separation, they discovered that a breakup can bring unexpected blessings. Their relationship from 2010 to 2014 was characterized by ups and downs due to personal issues that needed time and space to heal. Eventually, they decided to break up for good.
During the four years that followed, both Isaac and Joseph took the opportunity to focus on self-improvement and address the personal matters that had contributed to their split. In 2018, they came back together, having grown and healed, ready to embark on a healthy life together.
Isaac faced significant challenges. Having grown up in a deeply religious Christian household, he struggled with internalized homophobia throughout the initial stages of their relationship. He even underwent conversion therapy from 2003 to 2009. However, in 2009, while pursuing his master’s program in mental health counseling at Denver Seminary, he delved into psychological research that convinced him change in sexuality was unlikely. He also explored queer Christian culture and found a thriving community. It was at Highlands Church in Denver, an LGBTQ affirming non-denominational evangelical church, where he first encountered Joseph.
Joseph, having been raised in a Catholic family in Colorado Springs, was seeking a reconnection with spirituality but didn’t want to compromise his true self by returning to a Catholic church. When Isaac approached him after a church service, Joseph assumed he was part of the welcoming committee. However, as they started talking, Joseph realized they shared a similar space and connected immediately.
Their relationship blossomed, and in January 2011, they chose to live together in a new apartment in Denver. However, they kept their relationship hidden from others, presenting themselves as roommates. Isaac’s ongoing journey towards self-acceptance added strain to their relationship.
Isaac desired to be true to himself but feared losing his family connections and religious upbringing. He couldn’t fully commit to the relationship and always carried a sense of anxiety. This internal struggle took a toll on their bond, causing Isaac to question his identity and distance himself from Joseph at times.
Joseph found it challenging to navigate this situation, and another person might have walked away. Their relationship became more off-sync as Isaac’s doubts clashed with Joseph’s desire for commitment. After years of this cycle, they decided to take a vacation to Spain in July 2014. Unfortunately, just days before the trip, Joseph broke his ankle in a motor scooter accident. Despite the injury, he went to Spain, symbolizing the state of their relationship.
Upon returning to Denver, they decided to end their relationship. The silence between them persisted until 2017 when Isaac’s nina passed away. At that point, Isaac had come out and was no longer hiding. He was actively involved in LGBTQ Christian organizations and had found his purpose in helping LGBTQ individuals and their religious parents build healthy relationships.
Realizing he didn’t want to lose anyone like this again, Isaac planned to reach out to Joseph. However, his niece, Madison, unintentionally accelerated the process by texting Joseph on Thanksgiving. They began emailing each other regularly from November 2017 to February 2018, slowly rebuilding their connection.
In February 2018, they went on their second first date, almost a decade after their initial one. They had dinner, went to an arcade, and gradually fell in love all over again. The following months were filled with joy and playful adventures as they explored Denver together.
In April, Joseph moved into Isaac’s apartment, and in October 2020, they purchased their first home together. Isaac graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Colorado Boulder, while Joseph currently pursues a bachelor’s degree in organizational communications at Auraria Campus in Denver and works as an executive assistant at KeyBank.
In July 2022, Isaac proposed to Joseph at Cheesman Park in Denver, setting up a heartwarming scene with a video showcasing their relationship. Surrounded by 15 of Joseph’s closest friends and family members, Isaac popped the question, causing a joyful uproar that both startled and delighted Joseph.
A month later, Joseph reciprocated the proposal, presenting Isaac with a rose gold ring crafted from copper scraps from the Statue of Liberty, accompanied by some of Isaac’s godmother’s ashes. Gathering everyone at Union Station, Joseph welcomed Isaac with a spectacular display of confetti cannons as the train pulled into the station.
Their love story continues to unfold, filled with growth, forgiveness, and a deep appreciation for the journey they’ve taken together.
