With over 850 locations worldwide, Costco has attracted a diverse range of shoppers.

Among the different communities it caters to, the Amish community is particularly fond of Costco, according to David and Susan Schwartz. The couple spent seven years visiting over 200 Costco locations globally and recently published a book titled “The Joy of Costco: A Treasure Hunt from A to Z.” They witnessed firsthand in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, how beloved Costco is among the Amish, who are known for rejecting modern technology.

It's safe to say David and Susan Schwartz are two of Costco's biggest fans.

One reason why the Amish community loves Costco is because the stores in areas with a large Amish population, like Lancaster, Pennsylvania, cater to their preferred mode of transport: horse and buggy. Amish visitors have the convenience of a shed in the parking lot specifically for parking their horses and buggies.

According to Susan Schwartz, their book includes illustrations of the shed, which has gained attention on platforms like TikTok.

In addition to accommodating the Amish community’s parking needs, Costco is popular among them because they can buy in bulk. The Amish, known for having large families and seeking ways to save money while purchasing high-quality goods, find Costco to be a convenient option.

The Schwartz’ research also revealed that Costco understands and responds to the needs of other communities, such as Orthodox Jewish and Muslim communities, by offering halal and kosher products.

It’s worth noting that despite these efforts, Costco’s signature beef hot dogs, sold in their food halls since 1985, are not halal or kosher. Previously, Costco partnered with Hebrew National to offer kosher hot dogs, but in 2009, they switched to non-kosher hot dogs manufactured by Kirkland, leading to backlash from fans of Hebrew National.
