According to recent news, major automakers may not include AM Radio in their newer car models. However, that would be a grave mistake. Every month, over 80 million Americans rely on AM radio to get updates on local news, sports, and music as well as safety alerts. The larger geographical coverage of AM signals compared to FM and cell towers makes it an essential resource during natural disasters. Eliminating AM radio from cars would mean a lot of people missing out on urgent information, especially as over 40% of radio listeners access it while driving.
Talk radio is another vital aspect of AM radio with alternative perspectives and diverse audiences. AM radio is listened to by an overwhelming 97% of Hispanics and is crucial for the Black community as well. The National Association of Black-Owned Broadcasters has lent its support to the campaign to keep AM radio in cars. Furthermore, the removal of AM radio from vehicles would significantly affect rural and agricultural listeners, especially those who lack access to reliable broadband connectivity. AM radio is often the only source of information for them on farming practices, news, and music, with limited listening options.
Given its importance, two senators from opposing political factions have joined forces to introduce the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act of 2023. The bipartisan bill would require carmakers to include AM radio in new car models at no extra cost. Ten other senators have also supported the bill, and the House version has bipartisan approval. Such a feat underscored the significance of AM radio in the American way of life, with radio contributing to over a million jobs in the US amounting to $478 billion of GDP.
While some electric vehicle manufacturers argue that interference from EV batteries can cause static problems, automakers have already found a viable solution to protect AM signals. In view of this, Ford has announced plans to include AM radio in its 2024 car models. However, seven automakers, including BMW, Mazda, and Tesla, have removed AM radio from their EV models. They should emulate Ford’s example and bring back AM radio for the millions of Americans who rely on it. Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Ed Markey believe that consumers should have more choices, and AM radio should not be stripped away from them.
