There is an emerging trend on social media where women are criticizing the institution of marriage while advocating for a single lifestyle. One TikTok video that went viral depicts a girl putting on an engagement ring and envisioning her future as a miserable housewife. Each time the ring goes on her finger, images of household chores flash across the screen, depicting marriage as a form of modern-day servitude.

Another viral video, posted by TikTok user Julia Mazur, showcases her talking about the joys of being single at 29. She celebrates her freedom from marriage and children, stating that it allows her to enjoy activities like drinking, attending Beyonce shows, sleeping in, and watching reality TV. She emphasizes that she wouldn’t have such a fun life if she had to take care of a husband and children. Mazur’s video gained popularity on X (formerly known as Twitter) after conservative commentator Matt Walsh shared it, commenting, “Her life doesn’t revolve around her family and kids, instead it revolves around TV shows and pop stars. Worst of all, she’s too oblivious to realize how depressing this is.”

Even Hollywood stars are joining in, cautioning their fans about the downsides of marriage. Model and actress Emily Ratajkowski glamorizes divorce and tells her followers, “I don’t think there is anything better than being in your thirties and realizing that the married fantasy may not be all it’s cracked up to be.” In another viral video, Lilly Singh, an Indian-Canadian YouTuber, television host, comedian, writer, and actress, tells her audience, “Stop telling women that the greatest thing they’ll ever do in life is get married.”

These viral videos go beyond being mere Internet sensations; they reflect a broader change in societal attitudes towards marriage and relationships, especially among younger generations. The rise of online dating, career-focused aspirations, and evolving gender dynamics have led many to reconsider the traditional timeline of settling down and starting a family. Recent Census data shows a decline in marriage rates in the U.S., with the national marriage rate in 2021 being 14.9, down from 16.3 a decade ago.

Of course, marriage, like any significant life choice, comes with trade-offs. Building a family requires time, effort, and sacrifices, including prioritizing the needs of the family over personal wants. I’m only 23 and not a parent myself, but I’ve witnessed the amount of time and effort my parents invested in my upbringing through soccer practices and parent-teacher conferences. My father had to forgo certain activities he enjoyed, such as motorcycle travel and backpacking during his youth. So what are the women in these viral videos doing with the time they’ve saved by choosing not to have a family? Are they learning new skills, traveling, or creating memorable experiences? Unfortunately, many of them seem to spend their time drinking and watching reality TV, as seen in Julia Mazur’s case.

If you’re not part of a family, consider engaging in something captivating with your available time. These individuals seem to have an enormous amount of free time, but they appear to waste it by fixating on their small screens. It’s disheartening to witness such lack of motivation and purpose. While these viral videos focus on the negative aspects of marriage, they fail to acknowledge the many positives that come with it.

Marriage can provide emotional support, financial stability, and companionship. It forms a solid foundation for raising children and building a life together. However, these things require time, effort, and responsibility. Research indicates that, on average, married individuals tend to experience improved mental health, longer lifespans, and a reduced risk of developing inflammation-related diseases compared to their single counterparts. Marriage is a worthwhile endeavor. It’s not to say that everyone needs to prioritize marriage over being single, but it’s important to highlight the advantages that these viral videos often overlook.

Despite the technological and social advancements in our society, depression and loneliness have unfortunately become prevalent among my generation. People have become so self-absorbed that they fail to recognize the value and importance of meaningful relationships. Marriage represents an exciting and fulfilling journey, offering real commitment and love beyond the superficiality often found in American dating culture.

Don’t get me wrong, not everyone should rush into marriage and that lifestyle may not be suitable for everyone. There are plenty of people who don’t want to be married, and that’s perfectly fine. If you haven’t found the right person yet and are still exploring what lifestyle suits you in the long term, I encourage you to continue that journey. However, don’t let childless, single, unmarried women on the internet convince you that marriage is a form of indentured servitude with dire consequences and no benefits. I hope young people seek out other role models and creators who explore the positive aspects of marriage and family, because strong and healthy families benefit not only the individuals within them, but also society as a whole.
