- The individuals inside the missing Titan submersible are currently enclosed within an airtight vessel.
- The crew securely fastens the hatch with 17 bolts, leaving “no other means of escape,” according to David Pogue of CBS News.
- The Coast Guard is now in a time-sensitive pursuit to locate the submersible before its oxygen supply is depleted.
The individuals in the missing Titan submersible have been securely locked inside the vessel using a minimum of 17 deadbolts. The only way to free them is to locate and unlock the vessel.
This information was revealed in a CBS News report by David Pogue in November. Pogue himself embarked on a journey aboard OceanGate’s Titan submersible to explore the wreckage of the Titanic.
Currently, the submersible is missing, with a crew consisting of five individuals.
“The crew seals the hatch shut with 17 bolts. There is no alternate means of escape,” Pogue stated in his November report.
In a recent interview with the BBC, Pogue disclosed that, to his knowledge, the pod possesses at least seven different functionalities that could facilitate resurfacing. However, there is no solution for the submersible being trapped underwater or a means of escape if water were to infiltrate the compartment. Pogue stated, “There is no backup, there is no escape pod. It’s either reach the surface or face certain death.”
Pogue expressed skepticism about boarding the submersible himself back in November due to the apparent makeshift and off-the-shelf equipment on board. “You steer this sub with an Xbox game controller, and some of the ballast consists of abandoned construction pipes,” Pogue explained to the BBC.
The Titan submersible went missing approximately one hour and forty-five minutes into its descent to the Titanic wreck, according to the US Coast Guard. Currently, the Coast Guard is actively searching for the submersible, which is typically equipped with around four days’ worth of emergency oxygen for a crew of five.
However, time is of the essence as the crew inside the Titan may exhaust their oxygen supply by Thursday afternoon, Eastern Standard Time.
