Thanksgiving Travel Warning: Dangerous Weather Patterns Could Cause Chaos

The Latest Weather Update for Thanksgiving Travel By Aaron Barker, FOX Weather Published Nov. 12, 2023, 12:39 p.m. ET

As Thanksgiving approaches, millions of Americans are gearing up to travel for the holiday, with 48% of them planning to hit the road, according to the 2023 Deloitte holiday survey. This is an increase from last year’s 31% of holiday travelers. However, the calm weather that has been prevailing across the United States for the past few weeks might be about to change just in time for Thanksgiving travel.

FOX Weather Meteorologist Jane Minar warns that computer models are indicating a potentially more active weather pattern around the time of Thanksgiving travel. While it’s still early to predict specific numbers, travelers should remain alert for potential travel disruptions due to unexpected weather changes.

Leading up to Thanksgiving, a shift in the weather pattern is expected. The jet stream will start to dip south at the end of the week, potentially bringing stormy conditions to both sides of the country. This could result in snow across the northern states and heavy rain in the south from November 16th to 19th, causing possible travel issues just before Thanksgiving.

Looking ahead to Thanksgiving week, the Climate Prediction Center forecasts above-average temperatures and precipitation in the eastern two-thirds of the country. On the other hand, the West should expect below-average temperatures and average precipitation chances. There’s also a possibility of a strong storm developing in the western U.S. during Thanksgiving week, leading to heavy snow, strong winds, and rainy weather across the region.

As the holiday travel period approaches, stay updated on the latest weather forecasts to ensure a safe and pleasant travel experience.
