Taylor Swift Urges Fans to Embrace Kindness for ‘Speak Now’ Re-release

Before her performance of “Dear John” at her Minneapolis concert on Saturday night, Taylor Swift made a request to her fans. She asked them to show kindness and gentleness towards anyone they believe she may have written a song about.

“I’m 33 years old,” Swift said on Saturday. “I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19 except the songs I wrote and the memories we made together.”

Swift is currently re-recording her first six albums in order to regain ownership of her music. On July 7th, she will release “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version),” a re-recording of her third studio album from 2010. This album includes the song “Dear John,” which fans believe is about Swift’s brief relationship with singer John Mayer.

After Swift released “Red (Taylor’s Version),” fans inundated Jake Gyllenhaal’s Instagram with comments because they believed the breakup song “All Too Well” was about him. Swift is now asking her fans to be kind online.

“So what I’m trying to tell you,” Swift continued on Saturday, “is that I’m not releasing this album for you to go and feel the need to defend me on the internet against someone who I may have written a song about 14 million years ago.”

However, she announced that she would still perform “Dear John” because she is proud of it as a song.

Mayer told Rolling Stone in 2012 that “Dear John” “humiliated” him and made him feel “terrible.” He criticized the song for its “cheap songwriting.”

When asked about Mayer’s response during a 2012 interview with Katie Couric, Swift simply responded, “Oh, come on.”

It is unclear how Swift currently feels about Mayer and his comments. However, it is evident that she does not want her fans to harass him online. Swift also expressed her joy in seeing her fans demonstrate kindness towards each other at her concerts, where they bond and exchange friendship bracelets.

“As we approach the release of this album, I hope that kindness and gentleness extends to our online activities,” she said.

“What I’m trying to convey is that I’m releasing this album because I want to regain ownership of my music, and I believe that every artist who desires to own their music should have that opportunity. That is why I am releasing this album.”
