Tata Motors’s Ambitious Plan: Upskilling 50% of Employees with Cutting-Edge Auto Tech within Five Years

Tata Motors has announced its plan to equip more than 50% of its workforce with new-age auto tech capabilities within the next five years. This move is part of the company’s strategy to develop skilled and future-ready staff, with a focus on electric vehicles and other emerging technologies in the auto industry.

The company, which currently has over 57,000 employees, has partnered with organizations such as ARAI, Bosch, Mathworks, SAE, and Tata Technologies to provide professional certification programs in connected, electric, shared, and safe (CESS) through its upskilling program.

“A dynamically evolving industry like ours mandates consistent upskilling and training to remain ahead of the curve and future ready,” says Sitaram Kandi, Vice President – HR, Passenger Vehicles and Electric Vehicles at Tata Motors.

Tata Motors has curated training modules to address the developmental needs of all its employees, including technicians, engineers, and management. The company has also collaborated with local universities to create bespoke courses around its manufacturing plants, ensuring that its workers receive the necessary upskilling.

The company has partnered with prestigious institutes such as BITS Pilani, MIT-ADT University Pune, Institute of Technology Nirma University, Symbiosis International (Deemed Universities), Ganpat University, DY Patil International University, Oxford Polytechnic, ARKA Jain University, and Amity University to offer specialized programs for its workforce, including B Tech, M Tech, and Executive MBA.

For shop floor technicians, Tata Motors has designed a higher education program focused on auto electrical and electronics, mechatronics, and specialized welding skills. This program allows them to pursue a diploma in engineering, equipping them with the necessary qualifications to meet the evolving demands of the automotive industry.

Since acquiring the Ford India facility at Sanand, Tata Motors has undertaken a program to upskill the newly acquired workforce of over 820 employees in partnership with Gujarat’s Ganpat University. This initiative includes learning programs on future-oriented manufacturing technologies such as Industry 4.0, smart manufacturing, advanced control engineering, and advanced manufacturing systems and processes.

Tata Motors is also committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in manufacturing. The company currently has more than 4,500 women employees working on the shopfloor, contributing a range of functional capabilities.

“Collaborating with tech partners and academic institutions, tailor-made training programs, a nationwide ‘learn & earn’ apprenticeship program, and a sharp focus on diversity and inclusion are enabling us to develop and nurture a capable, future-ready workforce,” adds Kandi.

Tata Motors’ efforts extend beyond its own organization and channel partners, as it aims to contribute to the growth and success of the Indian auto industry as a whole.
