Sydney Sweeney Talks about Her Role as Spider-Woman in the Upcoming Madame Web Film

Sydney Sweeney from “Euphoria” to Make Superhero Debut

Sony’s tie-in Marvel Cinematic Universe has been overshadowed by Disney’s superior films like “Venom” and “Morbius.” However, with the introduction of Kraven the Hunter and the announcement of the upcoming Madame Web movie featuring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, Sony aims to revitalize its stagnant lineup of superhero films.

The Madame Web film stars Dakota Johnson as the clairvoyant mutant herself, not a Spider-Man variation, and includes well-known characters from Spider-Man’s comic narrative. While there are limited details and scheduling uncertainties due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, it is confirmed that Sydney Sweeney will play Julia Carpenter, also known as Spider-Woman.

In an interview with Variety, Sweeney expressed her excitement about the role, stating, “I was freaking out, of course. I went straight to the comic store and bought every comic that mentioned my character.” She believes the upcoming film will offer a unique take on the superhero genre, hoping to avoid the fatigue brought by the abundance of Marvel and DC titles.

Julia Carpenter also assumes the role of Madame Web

For those unfamiliar, according to Marvel, Julia Carpenter is a single mother who undergoes experimental treatments, transforming her into the hero Spider-Woman, and later, Arachne. It remains to be seen if Sony will delve into her origin story in this Madame Web-focused film or present her as an already-established hero.

The cast of the Madame Web film also includes Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts, Mike Epps, Adam Scott, and Zosia Mamet. Directed by S. J. Clarkson and based on a screenplay by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, the film is tentatively scheduled for release in February 2024.
