A man suspected of intentionally ramming a sheriff’s patrol vehicle in Bell Gardens was shot and injured by a deputy, according to authorities. The incident took place at around 4:30 a.m. near the intersection of Florence and Eastern avenues, as reported by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The wounded suspect was promptly taken to a hospital, although the extent of their injuries remains undisclosed. Fortunately, no deputies were harmed during the incident.
The sheriff’s department stated that a deputy from the East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station witnessed a white utility vehicle entering the intersection at a high speed, engaging in dangerous behavior like “donuts.” In an effort to protect other drivers and initiate a traffic stop, the deputy entered the intersection. However, it is believed that the suspect intentionally collided with the deputy’s patrol vehicle. Subsequently, the suspect vehicle deliberately rammed into the patrol vehicle once more, all while the deputy was still inside. It was during this sequence of events that a deputy-involved shooting occurred, leading to the apprehension of the suspect.
At this point, the identity of the suspect has not been released. In order to conduct an investigation, authorities temporarily closed the intersection of Florence and Eastern avenues. Additionally, the California Highway Patrol closed the offramps to eastbound Florence Avenue from the northbound and southbound Long Beach Freeway, although the freeway itself remained open.
