In the Whittier area, a suspect has been arrested by Sheriff’s detectives in connection with the stabbing death of an 84-year-old man. The suspect was apprehended at 9 a.m., as confirmed by the Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Authorities have charged him with burglary and murder, although his identity has not been disclosed pending further investigation. The case will be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for potential charges.
Thanks to tips from the public and other law enforcement agencies, along with retrieved surveillance footage, investigators were able to identify the suspect, according to officials.
The lifeless body of Rolland Alexander II was discovered on Tuesday at approximately 3:15 p.m. in a residence in the 15300 block of Goodhue Street, just west of the Whittier city limits in the unincorporated South Whittier area. Authorities allege that the suspect fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle, which was later found in Chino.
Detectives have reason to believe that the suspect also attacked an elderly man in the 15500 block of Fernview Street in Whittier, located about four-tenths of a mile from Alexander’s house and a short time before the murder. However, the suspect fled when the victim’s son intervened during the assault, Sheriff Robert Luna stated.
During a news conference on Wednesday afternoon, Luna showcased security footage that indicated the suspect entered Alexander’s residence around 2:45 p.m. on Monday. Luna further added that the suspect left the premises a couple of minutes later, driving away in Alexander’s silver Toyota RAV4, which was eventually found in Chino.
“Based on the surveillance video, we believe the murder occurred on Aug. 28 at approximately 2:45 p.m.,” Luna stated.
Luna revealed that security footage displayed Alexander’s vehicle being driven in Ontario around 3 a.m. on Tuesday. Subsequently, it was seen parked in Chino approximately three hours later.
